Successful 2023 Farmers Union Camp Inspires Young Rural Minds

The 2023 Farmers Union Camp, held from July 23 to 26 at Camp Byron near Huron, was a great success, attracting almost 100 young participants from different rural areas in South Dakota. The camp, organized by the South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU), aimed to educate and inspire the next generation of farmers and ranchers through a fun and comprehensive learning experience.

The campers were treated to a wide array of traditional camp activities, such as swimming, singing camp songs, and engaging in archery. The real highlight of the camp was the focus on agricultural education.

Samantha Olson, Education Specialist for SDFU, emphasized the importance of hands-on learning, particularly in the field of agriculture. The young participants got their hands dirty and learned about seed germination by actively planting seeds during the camp.

To further enhance their understanding of modern farming practices, the campers were taken on a visit to the Agtegra Innovation Center. Here, they were introduced to precision agriculture technology, and how it has transformed farming practices to boost productivity and sustainability.

The tour was an eye-opener for the young minds, inspiring them to consider the potential of technology in the agricultural sector.

Samantha Olson taught seed dissection sessions using South Dakota's corn and soybean plants, emphasizing seed science's impact on local farmers' lives.

Farm safety and the cooperative business model were not left behind. Through fun and interactive games, the campers learned about the value of teamwork in achieving common goals. These vital lessons provided valuable insights into the practical aspects of agriculture and how cooperation plays a pivotal role in rural communities.

One notable feature of the 2023 Farmers Union Camp was the introduction of the Jr. State Camp, specifically designed for children aged 9 to 12. The SDFU made sure the camp was affordable, with costs kept below $100, and transportation to and from the camp was provided to ensure accessibility to all interested participants.

SDFU Executive Director Karla Hofhenke emphasizes the camp's purpose to support farm families and rural communities by imparting agricultural knowledge and promoting sustainable farming practices. The camp prepares the next generation of farmers to tackle future challenges.
