The South Dakota State University Extension, Dakota Rural Action, and the South Dakota Local Foods Coalition are hosting the 2023 Local Foods Conference. Scheduled for Nov. 17-18 at The HUB on Southeast Technical College’s campus, this event promises to be a blend of knowledge and community engagement.
On Nov. 16, before the main conference, attendees can join a social event at Good Earth Farm with a tour and live entertainment. The main conference on Nov. 17 and 18 offers expert panels, breakout sessions, and discussions about local food activities. This year, there are special activities for elementary students, focusing on nutrition, food production, and sustainability.
Keynote speakers like Linda Black Elk, an ethnobotanist from Minneapolis, will delve into food sovereignty and sustainability. On the other hand, Nick Olson from Litchfield, associated with the Land Stewardship Project, will share insights on nurturing the next wave of local farmers.
Breakout sessions span a variety of themes, from high tunnels discussed by Kristine Lang to farm stress addressed by Andrea Bjornestad. Other discussions will revolve around organic farming techniques, indigenous perspectives on sovereignty, and more.
Panels featuring experts and chefs are expected to enhance South Dakota's local food ecosystem and improve food marketing strategies for community members.
Kristine Lang emphasized the event's spirit, emphasizing the importance of networking and the ongoing efforts to enhance South Dakota's food system.
