The Siouxland Feedlot Forum, a collaborative event by South Dakota State University Extension and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, is scheduled for June 18, 2024. This forum will be held at the South Sioux City Marriott Riverfront from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and requires a registration fee of $100 per person.
The forum aims to provide feedlot owners, managers, and industry partners with the latest research and strategies in feedlot nutrition and management to enhance profitability and sustainability. This event is particularly tailored to address the challenges and opportunities unique to the Upper Midwest's cattle production.
Four distinguished speakers will share their expertise:
Pete Anderson from Midwest PMS will discuss factors influencing carcass value, focusing on quality grade and weight.
Warren Rusche, SDSU Extension Feedlot Management Specialist, will talk about preparing feedlots for heat events, ensuring animal welfare and productivity during warm months.
Alfredo DiCostanzo of UNL will explore the nutritional quality of earlage and high-moisture ear corn, key feeds in the region known for their roughage and fiber content.
Zach Smith from the SDSU Department of Animal Science will cover managing cattle quality and cutability through proper energy supply.
Attendees will gain valuable insights into utilizing local feeds, managing cattle growth, and optimizing cattle value under the region’s specific environmental conditions.
The topics were selected based on regional research and reflect the distinct agricultural practices of the Upper Midwest compared to areas like southwest Kansas or the Texas panhandle.
For more information and to register for the event, visit the SDSU Extension website at extension.sdstate.edu/events and search for “feedlot”. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for those interested in supporting this educational event.
