Explore organic seed handling at Dakota’s best

By Scout Nelson

If you're an organic farmer, processor, or agricultural professional looking to deepen your knowledge about organic seed handling, don’t miss the opportunity to join the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) at Dakota’s Best Seed facility.

Scheduled for September 20, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT, this event is set to provide a comprehensive look at the processes that ensure organic integrity from seed to market.

The tour, part of the USDA Transitioning to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), will be led by Todd DenBesten, the facility's second-generation owner. Attendees will explore various stages of seed grain cleaning and handling, learn about the facility’s strict adherence to organic standards, and observe firsthand how organic seeds are processed and stored.

Storage practices are crucial in avoiding contamination and preserving the quality of seeds, and participants will gain insight into the best methods to accomplish this.

Additionally, Dr. Angela Jackson, the SD Organic Ag Transition Advisor with SDSPA, will cover important topics like seed handling protocols, equipment cleaning, and the critical documentation required for traceability and meeting regulatory standards. The session includes a Q&A segment, allowing ample time for attendees to ask questions and engage in networking.

While the event is free, pre-registration is necessary. Please note that lunch is not provided; participants are encouraged to bring their own meals for the networking session.

This engaging and educational tour not only emphasizes the importance of maintaining organic integrity but also strengthens community and professional connections within the organic farming industry. For more information and to register, visit the SDSPA website.
