The South Dakota State Fair was not just a showcase of agriculture but also a platform for promoting farm safety among youth. On Farmers Union Day, August 31, the Wessington Springs FFA chapter secured victory at the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl, a testament to their knowledge and preparedness regarding farm and ranch safety protocols.
The event, sponsored by the South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU), aims to educate young people on safe farming practices, reflecting the union’s commitment to community safety.
Doug Sombke, President of the SDFU and a seasoned farmer, noted the personal impact of farm accidents on families and highlighted the quiz bowl’s role in fostering a culture of safety among the youth.
Participants from various FFA chapters, including Canton, Milbank, and Kimball, competed by answering questions about crucial safety measures related to heavy machinery operation, chemical use, and livestock handling.
The competition not only serves as an educational tool but also as a critical reminder of the dangers inherent in farming—a sector known as one of the most hazardous industries.
Brady Duxbury, Agriculture Education Instructor and advisor for the Wessington Springs FFA, emphasized the broader relevance of farm safety, citing that even non-farming teens in South Dakota are likely to encounter farm environments, making basic safety knowledge essential.
The victorious team members—Addyson Orth, Mariah Messmer, Holden Jackson, and Haiden Boschee—demonstrated their commitment to safety, a dedication born from both study and practical experience on their farms. Their victory brought not just medals but also a cash reward, underscoring the tangible benefits of their hard work and safety awareness.
The event's success at the State Fair and the ongoing educational efforts by the SDFU through their Farm Safety Trailer and youth camp programs highlight the continuous commitment to enhancing farm safety awareness across South Dakota, aiming to reduce the number of farm-related accidents and ensure a safer working environment for the next generation of farmers.
