Moth enthusiasts are invited to a free Moth Walk at McCrory Gardens on July 19th from 9 to 11 p.m. This event, hosted by SDSU Extension and McCrory Gardens, aims to highlight the fascinating world of moths.
The evening begins with a presentation by Stephen Robertson, an SDSU Extension Pesticide Education Field Specialist. Robertson will discuss the art of "mothing" - using light or bait to attract moths for observation. Following the presentation, attendees will embark on a guided tour through the gardens, where various light stations will be set up to attract moths.
“Seeing is believing,” Robertson said. “When you can get close enough to see them and appreciate their beauty, the impact and connections are so much stronger than just listening to me give a talk.”
Moths, often overlooked, play crucial roles as pollinators and indicators of environmental health. Robertson hopes the Moth Walk will spark interest in moth observation and conservation.
Sydney Trio, McCrory Gardens Education Coordinator, shares Robertson's enthusiasm for moths. She believes the event is a unique opportunity to learn about these often-misunderstood creatures.
