Growing Progress on Farm Policy and Trade

Growing Progress on Farm Policy and Trade

By Jamie Martin

Agriculture has experienced significant uncertainty in recent years. Farmers and ranchers continue to manage rising input costs, economic pressure, and delays in major policy decisions. Despite these concerns, several recent developments suggest positive movement for the industry.

One major focus is the farm bill. Lawmakers have released updated language and are preparing committee discussions. While previous legislation included meaningful support for the farm safety net, producers still need a complete and modern farm bill.

Key areas such as conservation programs, agricultural credit, research funding, and rural development require updates. Since 2018, agriculture has faced global disruptions, inflation, and changing market conditions. A new farm bill would help producers manage risk and plan with greater confidence.

Trade policy is also advancing. New agreements have been concluded with Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala and Taiwan, and a framework arrangement has been announced with India. These efforts aim to improve market access and reduce trade barriers for U.S. agricultural exports.

Lawmakers have also emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement during recent discussions. Ensuring fair implementation and addressing remaining trade concerns will be important as the agreement approaches review.

Progress is also being made on year-round E15 fuel. The creation of the E15 Rural Domestic Energy Council highlights growing legislative support. Expanding E15 availability could strengthen demand for domestic crops, offer consumers additional fuel choices and support national energy goals.

Together, these developments demonstrate that agricultural priorities are gaining attention. Continued engagement from producers and stakeholders will be necessary to ensure that current momentum leads to lasting improvements for American agriculture.
