Nurturing a New Generation of Farmers in South Dakota

Nurturing a New Generation of Farmers in South Dakota

South Dakota's agricultural sector faces a concerning trend with nearly two-thirds of farmers aged 55 or older and an increasing number nearing retirement age. The Census of Agriculture revealed that over 4,000 principal producers in 2017 were over 75, raising concerns about farm succession.

As the number of farms declines over the years, hovering around 29,400 today compared to nearly 79,000 in 1923, the acreage remains stable, a testament to the enduring spirit of agriculture. Challenges confront young farmers trying to join the profession, with the cost of land being a significant barrier. The average value per acre of non-irrigated cropland has skyrocketed by 1,321 percent since 1991, pricing many aspiring farmers out of the market.

But amidst the trials lies a glimmer of hope. Several programs in South Dakota are dedicated to bridging the gap between retiring farmers and the next generation. South Dakota State University Extension offers estate planning and farm transition programs to help navigate the complexities of passing down farms.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program provides grants for education and mentoring initiatives, while also overseeing loan programs aimed at supporting new farmers' ambitions.

Young farmers in South Dakota are determined to sow the seeds of change. As they struggle with funding input costs and strive to secure affordable land, these budding agriculturists are not alone. The support systems in place aim to nurture and cultivate the dreams of a new generation, ensuring the state's agricultural heritage thrives for years to come.
