Protecting Irrigation Systems after Storm Damage

Protecting Irrigation Systems after Storm Damage

By Jamie Martin

Storms and high winds often damage irrigation systems, especially center pivots. Timely recovery steps help reduce downtime and avoid further issues.

Start with safety. Disconnect power immediately and ensure the system is grounded. If there’s any sign of electrical risk, stay away and contact a licensed electrician.

As Laxmi Prasad, North Dakota State University Extension water engineer, says, “Anchors and foundations may shift or fail in softened ground, undermining the system’s stability.”

Center pivots are especially vulnerable. High winds can flip or collapse them, misalign towers, and strain drive systems. Lightning strikes and water intrusion can harm electrical parts like control panels and wiring.

Debris from trees or metal sheets can also damage mechanical components. After ensuring safety, carefully examine the whole system. Take clear photos and videos from different angles before beginning any repairs.

Next, check your farm insurance policy and contact your agent to file a claim. Temporary fixes, like securing loose parts, can prevent more damage. For bigger repairs, call your irrigation service expert.

Don’t forget to check grounding on all electrical parts and keep track of repair costs.

Stay alert for downed power lines, chemical injection issues, or water pressure hazards.
