Soil Health Leaders Recognized in SD

The Ninth Annual Soil Health Conference, held on January 15-16 at the Ramkota Hotel and Event Center in Watertown, SD, was a significant event drawing around 500 participants, including numerous students.

This conference has become a pivotal moment for those in the agricultural sector to engage deeply with the principles of regenerative land management.

Shawn Freeland, the Chairman of the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition (SDSHC), expressed his admiration for the growing interest and active participation observed at this year's event. "The engagement and discussions amongst attendees demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing soil health," noted Freeland.

The conference featured a comprehensive agenda with 22 presentations and panels covering various aspects of land management. Notable sessions included discussions on the economics of regenerative agriculture and practical approaches to gardening and rangeland management for enhanced soil health.

During the event, the SDSHC took the opportunity to present its annual awards. The Legacy Award was bestowed upon Rock Hills Ranch, a family operation that has gained recognition for its dedication to conservation practices.

Nathan Jones, a committed soil scientist, received the Friend of Soil Health Award for his extensive contributions to soil science education and conservation efforts across the state.

The conference also incorporated a student contest to encourage youth involvement in soil health. The contests, which included both essay and video categories, saw impressive entries that addressed crucial topics such as soil biology and the importance of biodiversity.

Additionally, the SDSHC announced upcoming trials and invited participants to join future initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Information about these opportunities, as well as resources for gardeners and landowners, can be accessed through the SDSHC website.

As the conference concluded, plans were already underway for the next annual meeting, set to take place at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Aberdeen, SD, promising another year of valuable insights and advancements in soil health management.

The success of this year's conference and the enthusiastic participation of all involved underscore the continued importance of soil health in sustainable agriculture.
