South Dakota Farmer Feeds the Future with Scholarship

South Dakota Farmer Feeds the Future with Scholarship

By Scout Nelson

Grady Gullickson, a fourth-generation livestock producer from Flandreau, South Dakota, has been awarded the Graduate Student Scholarship from South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU), furthering his studies in ruminant nutrition. The scholarship aims to support the education and development of aspiring agricultural professionals, aligning with SDFU's commitment to nurturing the future of agriculture.

Gullickson's journey into ruminant nutrition began with his involvement in raising a flock of sheep for his 4-H and FFA projects. Managing their feed sparked his interest in the intricacies of nutrition and its impact on animal growth. Recognizing the tight profit margins in the livestock industry, Gullickson decided to pursue a graduate degree in ruminant nutrition at North Dakota State University.

Currently on track to receive his master's in ruminant nutrition in 2024, Gullickson's focus is on understanding the internal dynamics of animals and how feed influences performance. His goal is to assist livestock producers in improving feed efficiency and profitability.

South Dakota Farmers Union, in collaboration with Traveler’s Motor Club, supports Gullickson's educational pursuits. Karla Hofhenke, Executive Director of SDFU, emphasizes the importance of investing in the next generation of researchers to drive innovation in family agriculture.

Gene Hammond, President of Travelers Motor Club, shares the sentiment, highlighting the value of supporting individuals like Gullickson who aim to contribute to rural America through their education and careers.

Gullickson expresses gratitude for the $2,500 scholarship and acknowledges the crucial role of organizations like Farmers Union and businesses like Traveler’s Motor Club in supporting youth, recognizing them as the future of agriculture.
