South Dakota Planting Pace Well Behind Average



For the week ending Sunday, there were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 28% short, 50% adequate, and 12% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 13% very short, 34% short, 48% adequate, and 5% surplus.

Corn planted was 11%, well behind 60% last year and 32% for the five year average.

Soybeans planted was 5%, well behind 29% last year, and behind 12% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 3% very poor, 18% poor, 49% fair, 29% good, and 1% excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 63%, well behind 90% last year, and behind 69% average. Emerged was 28%, well behind 58% last year, and behind 36% average.

Oats planted was 63%, well behind 87% last year, and behind 69% average. Emerged was 35%, behind 53% last year and 40% average.

Sorghum planted was 6%, near 3% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 15% very poor, 41% poor, 35% fair, 9% good, and 0% excellent.
