South Dakota Receives $50M Boost for Agriculture and Wildlife

By Scout Nelson

The administration has allocated $50 million to South Dakota's farming sector, aiming to revitalize 25,000 acres of grassland, promote sustainable farming, and sustain waterfowl populations through the South Dakota Grassland Initiative, emphasizing the significance of soil health for wildlife and farming longevity.

The funding breakdown reveals various beneficiaries, including Every Acre Counts, receiving $8 million to promote cover cropping for enhanced farm profitability and soil health. The South Dakota Agricultural Land Trust is another prime recipient, with $18 million dedicated to preserving ranching practices around the Black Hills.

Supporting dairy producers, the Agropur Dairy Producers project has been granted $9.8 million to foster greenhouse gas reduction efforts, alongside offering monetary incentives to farmers.

On the technology front, 17 grants have been provided to farmers for energy-efficient solutions, significantly reducing annual energy costs. Notably, Bluestem Family Farms, Jackrabbit Family Farms, and Longview Farm have received grants for hog heat mats, leading to considerable cost savings and enhanced piglet growth.

Rodney Marten's farm shop will benefit from a geothermal heat pump system, promising both energy savings and electricity generation.

This injection of federal funds is part of the broader Investing in Rural America initiative, which channels over $5 billion into rural infrastructure and energy conservation, with an emphasis on climate-smart agriculture and conservation partnerships.
