The South Dakota Farmers Union has celebrated the pulse of life on family farms and ranches with its "Celebrating Life on the Family Farm & Ranch" photo contest. Winners for 2023 span various categories, showcasing diverse and authentic farm experiences.

The talented winners include:

  • Faith Kashas from Vermillion, a budding 11-year-old photographer. Her award-winning shot? An okra blossom, taken during a volunteering stint at a local vegetable farm.
  • Becky Rose from Chamberlain, who captures ranch moments with her family. Her winning image reflects a late supper delivery to the silage crew.
  • Samantha Swanson of Highmore, a nursing student who often takes breaks working with livestock. Her winning capture? A serene evening distributing minerals for cattle.
  • Kodi Retzer from Long Lake, a recent graduate working on her family's cattle operation. She bagged the prize with a mesmerizing sunset scene featuring sunflowers by a field.
  • Patti Johnson of Watertown, an English teacher. Her adorable photo features her 3-year-old son Cooper, reflecting his love for tractors and feeding cattle.
  • Karla Hofhenke, Executive Director of South Dakota Farmers Union, expressed the contest’s aim beautifully. It's not just about photography but celebrating the families that make South Dakota's agriculture industry thrive.
