USDA calls for South Dakota farmers to go organic

USDA calls for South Dakota farmers to go organic

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is reaching out to South Dakota's farmers and ranchers, urging them to explore organic farming through the Organic Transition Initiative (OTI). This comprehensive program is designed to facilitate the switch to organic certification, offering a wide range of support services.

Interested farmers are invited to apply at their local USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Service Center by the deadline of March 8, 2024. For those who miss the state ranking date, there's no need to worry; applications will roll over into the next funding cycle.

Tony Sunseri, South Dakota State Conservationist, emphasizes the natural synergy between organic farming and the USDA's conservation efforts. "Transitioning to organic agriculture aligns perfectly with our conservation goals, making our programs an ideal match for farmers on this path," he explains.

The initiative not only aims to financially support farmers through the transition but also to enrich their journey with educational resources and mentoring opportunities.

The Inflation Reduction Act has provided additional funds to the USDA's conservation programs, making it an ideal time for farmers to apply for assistance. The Organic Transition Initiative in South Dakota is a significant step towards promoting sustainable agriculture practices, offering a promising future.
