The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) is inviting public voting for the 2023 Specialty Crop Producer of the Year, recognizing a farmer who has significantly contributed to the state's specialty crop sector, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and nursery crops like floriculture.
The award, proudly supported by the S.D. Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) and the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, showcases the best in South Dakota's rich and diverse agricultural landscape. Three exceptional candidates have been shortlisted for the public's consideration, representing the pinnacle of innovation and commitment in specialty crop production in South Dakota.
The S.D. Specialty Crop Producer of the Year embodies leadership, advocacy for specialty crops, and a drive for growth and innovation in local food systems. This prestigious accolade also recognizes the winner's role in mentoring new farmers and investing in the future generation of agricultural producers.
The announcement of the winner, set to take place at the Upper Midwest Urban and Rural Agriculture Innovation (UMURAI) Conference on February 8-9, 2024, in Chamberlain, SD, marks a highlight for the state's agricultural community. The winner, along with nominees, will enjoy full access to the UMURAI Conference.
The recipient of the 'S.D. Specialty Crop Producer of the Year' will be honored with a special award plaque, a one-year membership to the SDSPA, and recognition across various platforms, including a statewide press release, the SDSPA website, social media, and newsletter.
The public is invited to vote on the SDSPA website to nominate a farmer who is shaping South Dakota's specialty crops. Voting should be done before January 15, 2024, to celebrate South Dakota's agricultural pride and highlight a deserving farmer.
