Winter Wheat, Spring Wheat Maturity Ahead of 2022 Pace; Corn, Soybean Emergence in South Dakota Also Ahead of Last Year


For the week ending June 11, 2023, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 11% very short, 42% short, 45% adequate, and 2% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 12% very short, 41% short, 46% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Winter wheat condition rated 9% very poor, 19% poor, 38% fair, 32% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 68%, ahead of 52% last year and 62% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 2% very poor, 4% poor, 47% fair, 44% good, and 3% excellent. Spring wheat headed was 20%, ahead of 7% last year, and near 17% average.

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 6% poor, 33% fair, 56% good, and 4% excellent. Corn emerged was 96%, ahead of 83% last year and 82% for the five-year average.

Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 5% poor, 33% fair, 57% good, and 4% excellent. Soybeans planted was 97%, ahead of 91% last year and 86% average. Emerged was 84%, well ahead of 52% last year and 64% average.

Oats condition rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 37% fair, 52% good, and 2% excellent. Oats headed was 40%, well ahead of 14% last year, and ahead of 21% average.

Sorghum condition rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 35% fair, 63% good, and 1% excellent. Sorghum planted was 92%, well ahead of 71% last year, and ahead of 75% average. Headed was 1%, equal to both last year and average.

Sunflowers planted was 70%, ahead of 53% last year and 56% average. Emerged was 23%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 4% very poor, 14% poor, 51% fair, 28% good, and 3% excellent.
