S.D. Spring, Winter Wheat, Along with Sorghum and Oats, Production Up

Based on August 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2022 corn crop is forecast at 794 million bushels, up 7% from last year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 5.40 million acres, down 1% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 147 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 230 million bushels, up 7% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.35 million acres, is down 1% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from last year.

South Dakota's 2022 winter wheat crop is forecast at 39.5 million bushels, up 44% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 760,000 acres, up 6% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 52 bushels per acre, up 14 bushels from last year.

Other spring wheat production is forecast at 32.1 million bushels, up 88% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 730,000 acres, up 24% from a year ago. The yield, forecast at 44 bushels per acre, is up 15 bushels from last year.

Oat production, at 6.84 million bushels, is up 82% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 95,000 acres, up 70% from a year ago. The yield is forecast at 72 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from last year.

Sorghum yield is forecast at 67 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 250,000 acres, up 19% from a year ago. Production of 16.8 million bushels is up 25% from a year ago.

Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 3.04 million tons, up 56% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.60 million acres, up 23% from 2021. Expected yield, at 1.90 tons per acre, is up 0.40 ton from last year. All other hay production is forecast at 2.10 million tons, up 82% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.40 million acres, up 27% from a year ago. Expected yield, at 1.50 tons per acre, is up 0.45 ton from last year.
