August Recess Opens Doors for Farmers

August Recess Opens Doors for Farmers

By Jamie Martin

As Congress begins its August recess, the American Farm Bureau is urging farmers and ranchers to meet with lawmakers and raise vital agricultural concerns. The House recess starts July 25, followed by the Senate on August 4, with lawmakers returning September 2.

This break is the perfect chance for grassroots advocacy, as farmers are trusted messengers. With over 90% of Americans expressing trust in farmers, personal conversations carry weight.

Agriculture labor reform is at the top of the list. The current guestworker system is outdated and unreliable. Without access to a dependable workforce, farms of all sizes face threats to their survival. Farm Bureau leaders have taken the issue to the Oval Office, and now local farmers are being asked to do the same in their districts.

Additionally, finishing the farm bill remains a top priority. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” has modernized reference prices and improved risk tools, but more work is needed to finalize remaining programs that support food, fiber, and fuel production.

As the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement gains momentum, it’s also time to make sure food policy includes real farm voices. The upcoming August 12 MAHA report should reflect the science behind farming practices. Farmers must speak about the tools and support they need to continue providing nutritious, safe, and sustainable food.

Whether you attend a town hall, host a farm visit, or speak at a local event, your voice matters. Let’s make the most of August by ensuring every lawmaker hears directly from a farmer.
