Discover the Future of Farming with SDSU's Virtual Fencing Workshop

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension invites producers and industry partners to a comprehensive one-day workshop on virtual fencing. Titled "Virtual Fencing 101: Expectations and Considerations", this event is scheduled for January 11, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT at the Box Elder Events Center. The workshop, which includes a pot roast lunch, is free of charge. A virtual attendance option is also available.

This workshop is designed for those interested in the innovative technology of virtual fencing for cattle and sheep. Virtual fencing, a significant advancement in precision agriculture, employs GPS and collars to maintain animals within predetermined boundaries.

Krista Ehlert, Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Range Specialist, emphasizes the workshop as an ideal platform for understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with virtual fencing. It's a chance to assess its viability as a management tool for different operations.

The program will feature experienced producers who have implemented virtual fencing, as well as Extension specialists and researchers from South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. The presentations will cover expectations from virtual fencing, considerations before adoption, including cost implications and alignment with management goals.

The use of virtual fencing on public lands and potential cost-sharing updates from the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be discussed.

Logan Vandermark, SDSU Extension Precision Livestock Field Specialist, highlights the diverse range of speakers, ensuring valuable takeaways for every participant.

Pre-registration by January 4 is necessary to ensure adequate food provision. Registration can be completed by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching for “fencing”. Registered participants will receive a detailed agenda via email.

This workshop presents a unique opportunity to delve into the realm of virtual fencing and its application in modern livestock management.
