South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is set to host an informative webinar series titled 'Backgrounding Fundamentals'. This event is tailored for cattle producers keen on understanding the nuances of backgrounding, a crucial phase in cattle production that involves feeding calves from weaning until they reach the finishing stage.
Scheduled for January 10, 17, and 24, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. CST, this series is designed to equip participants with the latest research and practical insights. The first session focuses on the market outlook and risk management, including Livestock Risk Protection insurance.
The second session aims to guide producers on setting growth targets and choosing suitable nutrition programs. The final week delves into strategies for managing feed costs and understanding cattle water intake.
Sydney Vanderhoff, an experienced SDSU Extension Beef Nutrition Field Specialist, underscores the importance of managing risks and feed costs, especially in the current volatile market. Her expertise is rooted in research conducted during her graduate studies, where she explored calf performance using implants and distillers grain supplementation.
The series is an excellent opportunity for both new and experienced producers to gain or refresh knowledge about backgrounding practices. Registration for the webinar is priced at $30 per person, including access to a recording of each session. Interested individuals can register by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching for “backgrounding”.
This webinar series is a must-attend for those looking to enhance their backgrounding operations and navigate the complexities of cattle feeding effectively.
