South Dakota Farmers demand Farm Bill updates

South Dakota Farmers demand Farm Bill updates

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota farmers and ranchers took time away from their work to advocate for updated agriculture policies during the 2024 National Farmers Union D.C. Fly-In, held from September 9-11. The event allowed family farmers to meet with policymakers and share the challenges they face in today’s agriculture industry.

“Our family farmers and ranchers need strong, up-to-date agriculture policy to support the important work we do each day,” said Doug Sombke, President of South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU). “Not many policymakers grew up on farms or ranches, so it is important they hear our stories and understand why fair and transparent markets are essential.”

More than 30 SDFU members attended the Fly-In to advocate for a Farm Bill that includes measures such as increased price transparency in cattle markets, mandatory country-of-origin labeling (MCOOL) for beef, and stronger enforcement of the Packers & Stockyards Act. The group also emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and improving soil health.

During the three-day event, farmers met with USDA officials and policymakers to share how current policies impact their operations. “This is our opportunity to share our story, so policymakers understand how their decisions affect our lives,” said Aberdeen farmer Jeff Kippley, Vice President of SDFU.

For many young farmers like Jerad Goens of Clear Lake, advocating for risk management programs is crucial. “We don’t have a lot of capital, so we need safety nets to help manage weather extremes and market uncertainty,” Goens said. His wife Amanda added, “Sharing our family’s farm story helps policymakers understand the real impact of their decisions.”

The Fly-In highlighted the need for a Farm Bill that reflects the current challenges faced by family farmers and ranchers, ensuring their voices are heard in Washington.
