Volga hosts SDSU’s integrated pest management school

By Scout Nelson

SDSU Extension's upcoming Integrated Pest Management Field School offers an immersive educational experience for those involved in the agricultural sector.

Set for July 23, 2024, at the SDSU Volga Farm, this event promises a day full of learning and practical application from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT.

Participants will benefit from a series of sessions led by experts from SDSU Extension. Philip Rozeboom, IPM Coordinator, highlights the field school's focus on addressing the challenges posed by pests and diseases through innovative management tactics.

Key topics include combating insecticide resistance, enhancing soil health, and managing weed and pest populations effectively.

The field demonstrations will allow attendees to see real-world applications of theories discussed in sessions, with additional insights into pre- and post-emergence herbicide strategies by Eric Jones, and disease management techniques by Connie Strunk and Madalyn Shires.

Laura Edwards will provide a tour of the Volga Farm’s Mesonet Station and discuss the local climate's impact on agricultural practices, offering forecasts that could influence farming strategies for the seasons ahead.

The day also includes a unique lunch presentation on soil health by Hans Klopp, further enriching the learning experience. Registration details and more can be found on the SDSU Extension Events page by searching “IPM”.

This event not only serves as a platform for learning and discussion but also strengthens the community of farming professionals by fostering connections and sharing cutting-edge agricultural practices.
