Smart Livestock Tech Boosts Beef Efficiency

Smart Livestock Tech Boosts Beef Efficiency

By Jamie Martin

Beef producers from across the Midwest will gather at the Eastern Nebraska Research Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) in Ithaca on November 14 for the Tri-State Beef Technology Series, a collaborative event presented by SDSU, ISU, and UNL Extension. The workshop runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. CST and focuses on precision livestock technology that’s transforming cattle production.

The agenda begins at 9:30 a.m. with registration and continues with a presentation on virtual fencing and wearable ear tags, demonstrating how technology can improve animal welfare and pasture utilization. Producers will also learn how to evaluate these systems during the “Reading the Fine Print” session.

A key highlight will be the SDSU Extension Precision Livestock Trailer demonstration, offering participants a hands-on look at innovative monitoring equipment and data collection tools. Following a vendor networking lunch, attendees will enjoy a UNL research update and a tour of the Klosterman Feedlot Innovation Center, emphasizing real-world applications of these emerging technologies.

Participation costs $30, which includes a meal, while vendors can register for a fee that covers two meals. Funding for this initiative comes from Beef Checkoff contributions through the Iowa Beef Industry Council and South Dakota State University.

For questions or registration assistance, contact Erin DeHaan, SDSU Extension Beef Specialist. This series aims to empower producers with practical knowledge to boost efficiency, traceability, and profitability in beef operations.
